When the English explorer, Henry Hudson, first arrived in this area during 1609, he wrote in his journal: "This is a good land to fall with." His words still ring true today as Highlands sits conveniently where the ocean, bays, waterways, marshes and hills create a great place to live, to visit, and to play.
It's a place steeped in a rich history beginning with the Lenape Indians who enjoyed feasting on clams and oysters, to some of the early settlers who arrived in America by the millions and eventually found their way to the southern end of Raritan Bay. So much has happend here. For example, during the 1700s, battles of the Revolutionary War were fought in our area. A century later, steamships and trains brought tourists to our neck of the woods in droves.
Today, tourism has faded into the pages of history as automobiles and trains began delivering people to exotic destinations far from our corner of the world. Nevertheless, Highlands is recognized by many as the perfect vacation destination. It has become a "hidden gem" where crowds of tourists don't necessarily realize how much still exists for their pleasure.
Our fabulous restaurants offer a variety of cuisines , waterfront views, as well as dock-and-dine opportunities. Boating and fishing are a way of life here and therefore charter and rental boats are always available. An historical national park on Sandy Hook, and a state park showcasing the Twin Lights of Navesink, are both within walking distance of Highlands. In addition, the Highlands Business Partnership sponsors a variety of events, such as the Highlands ClamFest. And these represent just the tip of the iceberg.
