Amazing location where you can enjoy bay and ocean beaches along with with a great forest that edges along the Navesink and Shrewsbury Rivers. It's a small town with great people, great views and countless activities year road. Truly unique and a great place to settle .
I lived on the (Sandy) Hook from 61-63. My father was the commanding Officer or the Coast Guard Station. What I miss so much about living there is exploring the old forts. I have never been back but I would jump at the chance!
There’s something for everyone. Everything in walking distance and you can’t beat the beach bars and water views. The best seafood. It’s a hidden gem.
Highlands is a great place to play. It isn't too far down the shore. I feel like we are at the juncture where we can easily go north, south, east and west to see so much and do so much.
Imagine waking up to the soft chiming of boats in the harbor, the salt air drifting in the windows. Imagine being friends with all your neighbors. I come from a long line of Highlanders and there’s a clear reason we don’t leave. There’s no place like home.
What the sea takes, it has given back beautifully. Highlands is a historic and resilient small town along the bay. A place to visit , play, or work or just dream . If you are lucky enough to live here, the sunrise, sunsets, and salt air becomes part of your daily experience.
Highlands is a small historical fisherman town and the first one at the New Jersey South shore. It’s connects us to New York City by the Ferry in just 45 minutes to say the least. Is a very historical town, nice to take walks by the beach or Hudson Trial to connect to Atlantic Highlands. Is a friendly town, bars restaurant and cafes and will say safe to go around biking, jogging, walking a dog and so on. You can enjoy great sunrises and sunsets as well. Not to mention the historical Twin Light Museum and very close to Sandy Hook beach and historical areas in the Park. Is a nice place to visit, live or gateway weekends.
In Spring :If you walk down Shore drive from where it starts near the bridge you will be on the paved-over Jersey Central Railroad. Without the greenery you will find broken cement structures, old rum-runner tunnels, brick lines cisterns, coal pieces from the days of steam and discarded pieces of iron whose uses one can only imagine. Look even closer: that long sloping hill running the length of town reveals remnants of the early days of Highlands. There I’ve found Purity Dairy glass milk bottles, coal ash from furnaces, broken dishware, glass containers for medicine, and even a Singer sewing machine: all remnants of the days when Navesink Ave had hotels, mansions and hundred-year old houses.
Almost every time a friend or family member visits me, I bring them to Highlands and show them the sights. And virtually everyone exclaims: "I had no idea all this was here in one place!"
I absolutely enjoy walking along some of the deserted beaches to look for sea glass, shells and maybe artifacts. I never come home empty-handed or more importantly empty-headed. I'm always filled with beautiful memories.
I don't think I could ever move away from Highlands. It's true that once you get sand in your shoes, you can never leave. This is the kind of place that gets into your blood even if you didn't grow up here.
I grew up in Highlands and then moved away to start my career and have a family. I live in a beautiful place now, but miss Highlands so much. That's why I return again and again! My memories always pull me back.
My friend moved from Chicago to take a job in New York City and he bought a place in Highlands. One year, he invited me to visit him and now I return to Highlands regularly. My friend passed away, but I still keep coming.
My sister moved to Highlands a few years ago and so finally we came to visit for a couple of weeks and decided to stay longer. We bought a place and now live in Highlands permanently. It's funny how things turn out.

The dragon winds of winter have subsided.
The white and grey blanket is finally gone.
Yellow sand dotted with interesting sea gifts await our discovery.
People poke their heads out of their dwellings,
To find a new and beautiful season before them!
Surfers wax and wane anew,
Paddle boarders walk on water blue,
Wind surfers skim the bay in delight.
Kite boarders play from day till night.
I wander the beaches in search of treasure true,
Ambergris or pretty bobbles to glue,
Forming jewelry or funny trade,
To give as gifts from natures made.
I gather all my troubles and woes,
And into the sea it goes.
The waves wash it back to shore,
But they don’t bother me anymore!
I place my fishing rod in hand
Without expectations, you understand.
For catching fish is fun it’s true,
But the journey is what beckons you.
Taking a break from feeding my soul,
I stop at my favorite watering holes,
The Inlet Café or Windansea.
Where the grub is great and satisfies me.
Chilango’s fish tacos or China Sea’s mango shrimp.
Highland’s restaurants and bars do not skimp.
And Lusty Lobster, give me a break,
One of everything, I will take!!!
I look for music when nighttime falls.
And dance and twirl until last call.
Along the beautiful Navesink ,
This must be heaven, I say with a wink!
Where you can watch the sunset and sunrise,
Between the bay and the ocean skies,
Rainbow hues form before your eyes,
Magically transporting you in surprise!
The yachts and little dinghies crawl
Underneath the Highlands bridge so tall.
Enjoying the view of the Twin Lights beam,
While casting their lines into the stream.
Some anchor at Bahrs for a break
or some the Elaine B fishing charter take
Or shop at Sasha’s lovely Boutique
Or pick a bouquet, In The Garden, unique.
And for the history buffs out there,
Indians, pirates, military fare,
Bike paths, walking trails galore,
Really, who could ask for more?
Highlands is a beautiful place,
With friendly people and a sunny face.
So close by the inviting sand and sea
You really must come and visit me!
